Thousands Of Students face Expulsion from UK Universities

The British government has stripped a London university of its right to sponsor visas for overseas students, leaving thousands of students facing possible deportation.

London Metropolitan University had its Highly Trusted Status — which allowed it to sponsor visas for students from outside the European Union — revoked by the UK Border Agency on Wednesday over alleged failings in its procedures.

The move means current overseas students have 60 days to enrol on a course elsewhere, with more than 2,000 students facing deportation if they fail to find another university, according to the National Union of Students (NUS).

The union warned of “catastrophic” effects on Britain’s industry for educating students from overseas, which was estimated last year to be worth £14 billion (17.7 billion euros, $22.2 billion).
Almost 300,000 non-EU foreign students were enrolled in Britain in the 2010-11 academic year.

The university said on its website: “The implications of the revocation are hugely significant and far-reaching… Our ABSOLUTE PRIORITY is to our students, both current and prospective, and the University will meet all its obligations to them.”

Immigration minister Damian Green told BBC radio that after an audit lasting six months, the Border Agency found “a serious systemic failure where it appears that the university doesn’t have the capacity to be a proper sponsor”.

He said that a quarter of students there lacked permission to stay in the country, while there was insufficient evidence that students spoke English and no proof that half of those enrolled had been attending lectures.

But he sought to reassure prospective students that “this will not be replicated across the university sector”.
The government had formed a task force to assist current students whose visas are set to be revoked, he added.

The NUS labelled the move political, linking it with promised immigration quotas brought in by Prime Minister David Cameron’s government.
It said it had contacted Cameron to “express anger at the way decisions have been made in recent weeks and to reiterate the potentially catastrophic effects on higher education… as an export industry”.

A Border Agency spokesman said: “The latest audit revealed problems with 61 percent of files randomly sampled. Allowing London Metropolitan University to continue to sponsor and teach international students was not an option.

These are problems with one university, not the whole sector.”
London Metropolitan is in the top 20 British recruiters of international students, with 6,000 EU and non-EU overseas students in 2010-11, according to government figures.

It said it was working closely with bodies including the Border Agency to try to resolve the problems.

We hope it wont be extended to other universities thereby blackmailing our african brothers and sisters.

Obafemi Awolowo University -OAU Post UTME Fallout: Former Wheelbarrow Pusher & "Agbero" Scores Highest Marks in Post UTME?

The story of this young Nigerian is an inspiration to many. Uche Okwuoha once slept under the bridge, roamed the streets as a tout, worked as a bus conductor and wheelbarrow pusher. Today, he has a different story.

After scoring the highest mark in the Obafemi Awolowo University post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in the 2010/2011 academic session (320 out of 400), he sits proud as a Law student in the insbosomution’s Faculty of Law.

An indigene of Imo State, the 27 year-old shared his inspiring story with Punch - a national daily.

At the time he was leaving his secondary school at Okigwe, Imo State, his intention was to gain admission to any University, join a cult group and kill as many people as he could.

Having heard that cult boys were very strong and fearful, he was eager to go to the University to join a cult group. “I had heard that cult boys were strong people and that people feared them. I also heard that as a student you could only succeed on campus if you were a member of a cult group. I told myself that I would join a cult group and kill as many people as I could,” he told Punch.

According to him, this was also the desire of most of his friends in Secondary School at that time. The boys believed that if they weren’t in a cult group, they wouldn’t be able to survive on campus.

However, after making failed attempts at his West African Senior Secondary School Examinations, General Certificate Examination, and the Unified Matriculation Examinations, he became frustrated.

He roamed the streets of Imo for a while and later decided to leave home so his parents would have enough money to take care of the remaining eight children.

Uche recounted that he left his parents home to live with his brother in a one-room apartment in Imo where he had to become a wheel-barrow pusher and a bus conductor to make ends meet. “It was very challenging and risky,” he said.

He later decided to move to Lagos and lived with his uncle. After some months, he left there to another brother’s place and began his life on the streets. “I rarely slept at home. I would sleep under bridges. My life back then was a mess. I was always drunk. There was nothing I did not smoke. I became so promiscuous.”

“I did not think I would get out of the pit, my life was just a mess. I had become an agbero. Going to school was not even an option. I would roam about the streets of Lagos smoking and drinking.”

But one day, when he was staying with an aunt, he got to hear about a college that trained students to write external examinations. “One day I was outside my aunt’s shop and I saw one young boy holding some books. I was just curious about where he was going, so I stopped him and asked; he then told me about a college that prepares students to write external examinations. Right there, I felt this joy. It was like my dark days were over.”

He enrolled for his UTME tutorials at Adams College in Oshodi. Despite many challenges he faced, he scored 289 in his UTME and went on to score 320 at the post-UTME later that year.

He received a full scholarship from Mr Adebola Adams, the Proprietor of Adams College who described Uche’s story as remarkable.

Uche advised parents to spend more time with their children. Speaking on his aspirations, he hopes to be the best graduating student and plans “to get a Master’s degree in any reputable university abroad. My dream is to reach the apex of my career.”

Well done Uche Okwuoha!

Nigerian International Student’s Guide to Tuition Free Universities in Norway

I simply love this information. The first time I learnt about this I was elated so like others who need these info, I hope you make good use of the opportunity it creates.

Do you wish to study in Norway? Do you know that Norwegian universities has become a popular destination for foreign students especially Nigerians looking for an international education .

Why Norway?

Norwegian universities and state university colleges as a rule do not charge tuition fees for international students. However, students will need to pay a semester fee of NOK 300-600 ($50-100) each semester.

This is applicable for all levels, including undergraduate studies, Masters programmes and Ph.D. programmes. Note that some state universities and university colleges may have tuition fees for a few specialized programmes. Typically these programmes are at the Masters level.

Most private institutions have tuition fees for all their programmes and courses. But the fees are usually significantly lower than those of comparable studies in most other countries. Also, foreign students don’t pay higher tuition fees than Norwegian students.

Cost of Studying in Norway:
You should take into consideration that living expenses in Norway are higher than in many other countries.  Living expenses would amount to 89.000 NOK ($15,000) per year.

Scholarships in Sweden for International Students - Nigerian Students Take note

Up until 2010,  Sweden has been one of the few countries in Europe where you can study for free. The Swedish Government has then passed a law that charges tuition and application fees for students from non-EU/EEA countries to be supplemented by scholarship programs such as the Swedish Institute Scholarships. In addition, a significant number of Swedish Universities still offer scholarships in the form of tuition waivers for international students.

There are various tuition free universities in Sweden for Africans and Nigerians can benefit from this.

Sweden Government Scholarships for International Students - Nigerian

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships
The Swedish Institute provides scholarships in Sweden to highly-qualified international students from developing countries who wants to pursue a Masters or Bachelor’s Degree in many fields of study at Sweden Universities.  The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees.  About 120 scholarships are offered yearly.

Guest Scholarship Program for PhD and Postdoctoral Studies in Sweden
The Guest Scholarship Program provides PhD candidates and Postdoctoral researchers with an excellent opportunity to conduct a study or research visit to a Swedish university within all academic fields.  The scholarships are for candidates from developing countries identified by ODA as well as candidates from Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.  The scholarship amounts to SEK 12,000 per month for PhD students and SEK 15,000 for post-doctoral studies (plus travel grants and insurance in certain cases).  Only about 30 scholarships are awarded yearly.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships in Swedish Universities
The EU’s Erasmus Mundus Program makes Europe’s educational opportunities more accessible to the rest of the world by granting scholarships to non-European students attending select programs. Some of these eligible programs involve Swedish universities. Ten Swedish Universities sponsor a total of 30 Erasmus Mundus supported programs.  Erasmus Mundus Scholarships cover the living costs, tuition fees, traveling and insurance costs of the students who are accepted into supported programs.

See the complete list of  Universities that offer full and partial scholarships in the form of tuition waivers for international students at this link.

Tuition Free Universities in Sweden for Nigerians

In 2010, the Swedish parliament has passed a law that charges tuition and application fees for students from non-EU/EEA countries starting  2011/2012 academic year, to be supplemented by scholarship programs. Thus, there are no government-mandated tuition-free universities in Sweden anymore.

However, a significant number of Universities still offer full and partial scholarships in the form of tuition waivers for international students.

Up until now, Sweden has been one of the few countries in Europe that has not charged any types of fees. All students—regardless of nationality—have been funded by Swedish taxpayers. Global competition for talent is increasing sharply and the government wants Swedish universities to compete on equal terms with universities in other countries thus the charging of tuition fees.

Since Sweden acknowledges how non-EU/EEA students add value to the Swedish educational system and recognize them as an attractive talent base, the government will introduce new scholarship programs in Sweden in succeeding years.

University of Lagos-Unilag Change of Course/Supplementary Form for 2012 Out?

The aftermath of 2012/2013 released of University of Lagos admission merit list is the
mad rush for change of course form or what others had dubbed "supplementary form", the problem is just that the form is not seen any where.

DOWNLOAD UNILAG PAST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 2013/2014 HERE

On forums, on blogs, on Facabook, even tweets have not been spared of the most essential commodity-change of course form for Unilag 2012 by aspiraing students of the institution.

So the question is why the delays?

what is keeping them from releasing teh change of course form?
Previous years change of course forms are released immediately  after merit list
why is this year's different?

I started my investigation and heard some campus gossips.
I heard rumors flying around that the form WILL not be relesed this year.

Hmmm, that will be bad news abi?

Another rumor has it that the school wants to sell their Diploma forms first...
But August 21st has been set for registration for jambites, so that holds very little water.

I went further to investigate the autheticity of such and so my surprised
three closed top people who should know also confirmed such.

But reasons they gave made some sense.

The Reasons Why Change of Course/Supplementary Form  Might Not be Used this Year

1. Most admission fraud are done through this process
2. Many departments and courses have become dumping ground for those who could not make
their primary course - faculty of Education has been a major victim of this charade.
3. Many of these students go to perform poorly in their departments because of lack of motivation- since this
was not their initial course
4. There have been lots of complaint about students of the school , lecturers and others using this means to
defraud suspecting students of their money, by promising admission, which they cannot deliver.
5. This process has also led to some students becoming part of some noctunal activities- cultist, campus
prostitutes
6. Arguement against the former process says, many destinies are been changed/deformed by the process.
Imagine a Lawyer becoming a teacher of Igbo!

Will there be any new list?
Yes, definately there will be another admission list

The next question will be

what will be the criteria for supplemeary admission then?

what we are hearing sound strange, but could be true.

1. Those that didnt meet the cut-off marks by 3-5marks for their courses will be considered for their first
choice course.
2. Those that didnt meet the cut-off for the first choice but meet their second choice course cut-off will be
considered, provided they choose Unilag as their second choice
3. Some admission slots will be reserved for Profs, Doctors, and School management
4. Others will be for those who can push it through as long as their cnadidates scored 40% aggregate in post
Utme exams- this will fly.

Implications Of this:
1. Less admission fraud
2. More students will get to study their true career courses
3. More Jambites will not be admitted, expecially if they scored low and have no connection or helpers.
4. Supplimentary list will be very competitive
5. Those that chose other schools part from Unilag as their second choice may miss out completely if they
didnt meet the cut of marks-Merit list.

Whatever happens, lets know that Unilag university admissions will never be the same again, as the new
leadership tends to give the school a honourary path.

For me, I will say let the revolution continue!

University of Nigeria-UNN releases post-UTME 2012/2013 Result - Check Here

The University of Nigeria has released the results of the just concluded 2012 Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (P-UTME) held at the Nsukka campus of the University.

The batch of candidates that participated in the screening exercise was drawn from all the faculties of the University.

They include those from Health Sciences and Technology, Medical Sciences, Agriculture, Biological sciences and Dentistry.

Others are Engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Social Sciences including Public Administration and Local Government.

The chairman, UNN Senate Entrance Board, Professor Polycarp Chigbu said that the reason for the prompt release of the results was to reduce the anxiety of candidates as well as to ensure the integrity of the test.

According to him, “We don’t want to create room for anyone to tamper with the results in any negative form.”

He added, “UNN maintains and insists on standards, the exercise is organized to maintain zero tolerance for examination malpractice, irregularity and anything short of quality.”

Chigbu said that the University would continue to improve on the arrangements for the screening test as well as maintain the prompt release of results thereafter.

He recalled that last year, the result of the first batch of candidates to sit for the test was released almost four hours after the screening exercise.
The second batch followed immediately.
Candidates who participated in the screening exercise are advised to visit the University portal www.unnportal.com to check  their results.
